About Mr. Peter Obi

Peter Gregory Obi, born on July 19, 1961, in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria, is a prominent Nigerian businessman and politician. He was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election. Obi received his secondary education at Christ the King College, Onitsha, and earned a B.A. (Hons) in Philosophy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1984. He furthered his education at several prestigious institutions globally, including Lagos Business School, Harvard Business School, London School of Economics, Columbia Business School, International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland, Saïd Business School at Oxford University, Cambridge Judge Business School, and Kellogg School of Management.

Before entering politics, Obi had a successful career in business and banking. He held leadership positions in various private establishments, including Next International Nigeria Ltd, Guardian Express Mortgage Bank Ltd, Guardian Express Bank Plc, Future View Securities Ltd, Paymaster Nigeria Ltd, Chams Nigeria Ltd, Data Corp Ltd, and Card Centre Ltd. Notably, he was the youngest chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc.

Obi's political career began when he contested for the Governor of Anambra State in 2003 under the All-Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). After a lengthy legal battle, he was declared the winner and assumed office on March 17, 2006. His tenure was marked by several judicial interventions, including an impeachment in November 2006, which was later overturned, and a Supreme Court ruling that allowed him to complete his full four-year term. He was re-elected for a second term in 2010, serving until March 17, 2014. His governorship was characterized by improvements in state finances, education, and healthcare.

Obi's personal life includes his marriage to Margaret Brownson Obi (née Usen) in 1992, with whom he has two children, Oseloka and Gabriella. He is a Catholic of Igbo descent. He has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career, including "Man of the Year" by The Sun in 2007, "Most Prudent Governor in Nigeria" by This Day in 2009, and the "Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Best Performing Governor on Immunization in Southeast, Nigeria" in 2012.
